Art

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

The National Curriculum

Across the year, pupils in Years 1 to 6 complete 3 units of Art. They spend a half-term on each of the following units: drawing, printing or painting and sculpture. Over a series of lessons, they spend time researching the life of their selected artist and analysing the artist's work. Using their sketchbooks, they develop and practise their skills using a range of materials and techniques in their sketchbooks. They then use their new skills and knowledge of the artists to create their final piece of artwork, which they then complete an evaluation on.
